Senior Hurlers Go Down To Longwood

Senior Hurling Championship

Venue: Trim

Opponents: Longwood

Half Time: Drumree 2-04 Longwood 1-06

Full Time: Longwood 2-11 Drumree 2-06

Drumree were beaten by Longwood in the second round of the Senior Hurling Championship held in Trim on Saturday evening. In perfect conditions it was Longwood who came out on top in what was a tight game throughout.

Longwood were first out of the traps with a point from Rory Maguire but Drumree responded with a James Reilly free. The first goal of the game came when Mickey Healy won a high ball in front of the Drumree goals and blasted to the net. Healy was substituted soon after with an injury and Shane Troy came into the game a lot more. Two more James Reilly frees and a Davy Troy point brought the deficit back to 1-02 to 0-04 with 15 minutes gone, however Longwood got the next 3 scores with some excellent long range points.

It was Drumree who finished the stronger & blitzed their opponents with two goals in the last five minutes of the half. The first came from a long ball into Troy who hit the post with his first effort before holding off his man and flicking the ball to the net on the second attempt. The next goal was not too far away as another long ball from John Crimmins found brother, David and he doubled on it in the air, giving the goal keeper no chance and leaving it 2-04 to 1-06 to Drumree at half time.

The Second half started with James Reilly & Anthony Healy trading points from frees before Longwood struck for a goal, the damage would have been a lot more were it not for some outstanding defending by Keith Commons & Shane Troy. Longwood tagged on a couple more points leaving it 2-09 to 2-05, before the introduction of Caoimhin King, GT Troy & Johnny Gilsenan who all made a contribution.

Drumree pushed forward looking for scores and were rewarded with another point from James Reilly, but it was Longwood who took advantage of the space left at the back and got two quick points, a sublime side line cut by Aaron Ennis being the pick of them. The last puck of the game went to Shane Troy who drove a 21 yard free into a wall of Longwood players but couldn’t find its way through. With that the referee blew the final whistle and Longwood were victorious on a score line of 2-11 to 2-06.
